Phonics

Phonics is revised at the beginning of Year 2.  Once children have secured their Year 1 sounds and are reading a number of 'tricky' words (words that can't be sounded out easily) fluently, they will progress to the spelling programme.  This programme will take them to the end of the year.

Alongside phonics and spellings, children will be placed into guided reading groups where they will get to read to an adult 3 x per week - sessions include learning new vocabulary, discussing the text and teaching comprehension.  Children will each be given a book to read at school and at home each week that matches their phonics and reading fluency level.  Children are expected to finish this programme towards the end of Year 2 in preparation for Big Cats banded reading books.
